We have just released SuperLab 6 beta 11 that re-enables playing of video on Mac OS 10.15 “Catalina”. The new beta also fixes a couple of other bugs reported by users.
Apple announced a while back that “Catalina” would drop support for older 32-bit applications. There was no concern at Cedrus because SuperLab had been a 64-bit app for over five years. However, in July, we discovered that somewhere deep in the program, a third party library was still 32-bit, and this component was required to play movies. Apple’s own dev tools had failed to detect this incompatibility. We scrambled and ended up rewriting the video playing portion* of SuperLab for Mac.
The end result is worth it, we think. While playing a video is the same, starting a video and removing it from the screen feels a little zippier. The difference is particularly noticeable if your experiment plays more than a one video at a time.
* Not to get real technical: SuperLab 6 beta 11 now uses Apple’s AVFoundation.
