Support   SV-1    Adjusting the Dials

What Do The Dials Do?

SV-1 provides two adjustment dials: Threshold and Delay. These assist you in setting up SV-1 optimally for detecting a voice key.

With the Threshold dial, you can set the minimum voice level (or volume). The participant’s voice level must rise above the threshold in order to have a voice key.

The Delay lets you adjust the sensitivity of SV-1. It is essentially how long the participant’s voice level must rise above the threshold in order to have a voice key. Adding a small delay helps the experiment avoid “false” voice keys caused by things like the a tap on a desk or a dropped object.

Using The Dials

To adjust the dials, we recommend the following procedure:

1.

Turn both dials all the way counterclockwise to the minus sign.

2.

Plug the microphone in if it is not already plugged in; see Setup.

3.

Speak into the microphone. The orange Voice light should turn on when you speak.

Note: When testing, do not whistle — talk instead.  SV-1 is optimized for the human voice frequency range and will not detect a whistle easily.

4.

As you speak, turn the Threshold dial clockwise, slowly, until SV-1 can no longer detect your voice and the orange Voice indicator stops lighting up. Then turn the Threshold dial counterclockwise, slowly, until the Voice indicator starts lighting up again.

At this point, setting up SV-1 is complete. It is entirely up to you whether you want to adjust the Delay dial or not. Adding too much delay will make SV-1 unable to detect sounds with a short “peak”, e.g. the word “six”.
